Eteuati’s Maths Learning Story
Term 3 2019

How do we solve a tricky math problem as a group?

Eluama’s family in Tokelau tell him to get some coconuts.
He climbs three different coconut trees.

He climbed 3m up the first tree,
3.9m up the second tree and 2.2m up the third tree.

His friend climbed 3 different trees.
The first one he climbed was 2.4m,
the second one he climbed was 3.3m
and the third one he climbed was 4.3m.

Which of them did the most climbing that day?
So first we write down the problem. Then we were comparing
the first tree that Eluama climbed which was 3m and the second
tree that he climbed wish was 3.9m so I added them together
which = 6.9m. At that point, we had to add the third tree Eluama
climbed, which was 4.3m so we add 4.3 to 6.9 and it =11.2  so
that is how high Eluama climbed.

The first tree that his friend climbed, he went 2.4m up so
I add the first tree that his friend climbed to the second tree
that he climbed which was 3.3m and it =5.7. We added the
third tree that his friend climbed which was 4.3m and it = 10.
Next, I compared how high Eluama climbed which was 11.2 with
how high his friend climbed which was 10 the difference was
Eluama climbed 1.2m higher!

I want you to know that I am good at asking questions
during maths because my group always gives me an idea
in my head.

I am also good at working in a group because they will help
me when I need help in math and I can help them too.
The key competency I use was sharing my ideas with my
group that they know what I am doing or what I am
thinking.

I want you to know that I need to work on being in the
waka
because I am always getting distracted by my
surroundings of my friends.
The key competency that will help me next time is
managing self so I can be in the waka.

I want you to know that I find it hard to not work in a
group because I can't get an idea in my head.

Sylvain’s Feedback
You were good at asking questions and sharing your ideas
because you can push the group forward.
You needed to work on taking more responsibility because
you get distracted from others.
